Speaking on the Jan. 12 episode of Josh Horowitz’s “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, the 35-year-old reflected on her career, discussing filmmaker Quentin Tarantino, who has previously expressed interest in working with her.

Lawrence suggested that she may have lost the chance to appear in the director’s 2019 film after being questioned about her suitability to portray 1960s screen icon Sharon Tate.

“Well, he did [want me]and then everybody was like, ‘she’s not pretty enough to play Sharon Tate,’” Lawrence said.

While Horowitz expressed disbelief, Lawrence said she was “pretty sure” the backlash played a role, or that she had repeated the story so often she had come to believe it herself.

The role of Sharon Tate ultimately went to Australian actress Margot Robbie, who was widely praised for her performance in the film, which is set against the backdrop of the Manson murders.

Before the film’s release, Sharon Tate’s sister Debra also said she would have chosen Robbie over Lawrence. In a 2019 interview with TMZshe cited Robbie’s physical resemblance and demeanor as being closer to that of her late sister, adding that while Lawrence was a talented actress, she did not fit her personal vision of Sharon.

“She’s just, I don’t know, she’s not pretty enough to play Sharon,” Debra said at the time. “That’s a horrible thing to say, but I have my standards.”

After the film’s release, Debra told Vanity Fair that Robbie’s portrayal moved her to tears.

Tarantino has since addressed speculation about Lawrence’s involvement with the project. On a 2021 episode of the “WTF with Marc Maron” podcast, the director clarified that he had not considered Lawrence for the role of Sharon Tate, but rather for the part of Manson family member Squeaky Fromme. Lawrence read the script at his home and expressed interest, he said, but the role ultimately went to Dakota Fanning.

“She’s [Lawrence] a very nice person and I like her, I respect her as an actress,” Tarantino said, adding that the collaboration simply “didn’t work out.”

Lawrence, 35, began her acting career in 2006 and is regarded as one of Hollywood’s most successful actresses both commercially and critically. She has won an Academy Award, a British Academy Film Award, three Golden Globe Awards and four Critics’ Choice Awards. According to Forbesshe was the world’s highest-paid actress in 2015 and 2016.
