Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) on Friday (January 23) appointed former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav as the new national working president of the party. The decision signals a generational change in the party’s top leadership, at a time when the RJD is trying to reshape its strategy in Bihar politics.
Tejashwi Yadav’s appointment was announced in the inaugural session of RJD’s national executive meeting held in Patna. Party President Lalu Prasad Yadav handed over the appointment letter to his son Tejashwi Yadav in the presence of senior leaders. His mother and former Chief Minister Rabri Devi was also present on this occasion. RJD shared pictures of the event on its official
This promotion of 36-year-old Tejashwi Yadav will further strengthen his hold on the party’s organizational structure and day-to-day decisions. Political analysts believe that this step is considered important towards reorganizing RJD under youth leadership and preparing it for the upcoming election challenges.
However, this rise of Tejashwi Yadav also became a cause of controversy within the family. His sister Rohini Acharya, who has publicly distanced herself from politics and severed ties with the matriarch following the RJD’s crushing defeat in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, reacted sharply to the appointment. Rohini Acharya, in an anonymous post on X, targeted the party’s internal leadership and supporters.
He wrote in Hindi, “A kind of end to the glorious innings of the man at the pinnacle of politics, congratulations to the sycophants and the “gang-e-infiltration” on the coronation of the “puppet-turned-prince” in their hands…” This comment is being seen as a sign of growing power struggle and dissatisfaction within the party.
Tejashwi Yadav’s entry into Bihar politics was not through traditional political training, but under the pressure of inheritance and circumstances. RJD founder Lalu Prasad Yadav’s younger son Tejashwi entered politics after a brief career in cricket. After Lalu Prasad went to jail in fodder scam cases, Tejashwi had to take over the responsibility of leadership.
In 2015, he became the Deputy Chief Minister in the grand alliance government with Nitish Kumar. At the age of just 26, he was one of the youngest Deputy Chief Ministers in the country and held important portfolios like road construction and public works. In 2017, after Nitish Kumar broke away from the alliance due to corruption allegations, Tejashwi had to move into the role of opposition.
He then tried to revive the RJD organisation, sharpen the election message and establish himself as the main challenger against the NDA. RJD emerged as the largest party in the 2020 assembly elections, although it failed to form the government. With the return of Nitish Kumar in 2022, Tejashwi Yadav again becomes the Deputy Chief Minister.
The appointment of Tejashwi Yadav as National Working President is being considered as the beginning of a new chapter for RJD, but at the same time it is also giving rise to political debates within and outside the party.
