Technology giant Meta is reportedly planning to trial premium subscriptions for Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp users in the coming months as part of its latest experiment with paid services. This new offering will provide access to several features, including artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. However, the platform's core services will remain free under this new plan.
The company is also planning to test subscriptions for features like the Vibes video generation app, which Meta says can "turn your ideas into reality with new AI visual creation tools." The company announced Vibes in September as part of the latest version of its Meta AI app.
According to TechCrunch, the company also intends to utilize Manus in its subscription plans, a Chinese AI firm that Meta reportedly agreed to acquire for $2 billion in December. Meta will also continue to offer standalone Manus subscriptions to businesses.
At the time, the company said the deal would help improve its own AI by giving people access to "agents"—tools that can perform complex tasks with minimal user interaction, such as planning trips or creating presentations.
Unlike many chatbots, which require users to repeatedly ask questions before getting the desired response, Manus claims its service can plan, execute, and complete tasks independently based on instructions.
In January, Beijing said it would investigate the Meta deal to determine if it violated China's technology export laws or national security regulations.
