Regarding the trade deal between India and America, Union Minister Piyush Goyal said in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday amidst a lot of noise that during the talks regarding the deal between the two countries, both the parties were successful in ensuring the protection of their respective interests. The Indian side was successful in protecting its important sectors, especially agriculture and the interests of farmers, during the deal.
Amid the uproar by MPs, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said, "Since PM Narendra Modi's visit to the US in February 2025, there have been continuous and regular discussions between India and the US to achieve a balanced, mutually beneficial and bilateral trade deal. Last year, negotiators from both sides held detailed talks at different levels."
He further said, "Keeping in mind the vital interests of both sides during the negotiations, it is natural that both sides would want to protect their respective essential and sensitive sectors and also ensure the best outcome. During the mutual talks, the Indian side was successful in protecting its sensitive sectors, especially the interests of agriculture and dairy. After a year of negotiations, both sides were successful in finalizing various areas of the bilateral trade agreement."
Union Minister Piyush Goyal said that sensitive issues have been kept apart from the trade deal. Full care has been taken of fertilizers and agriculture sector. There will be no loss to the farmers. This deal will benefit both India and America.
Regarding the tariff, Goyal further said, "On February 2, 2026, PM Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump had a telephone conversation on several matters of bilateral and international importance. Following this, President Trump announced the reduction of the tariff to 18%. I would like to emphasize that this tariff is much lower than the tariffs imposed by the US on many competitor countries."
Talking about the Developed India trade deal, Union Minister Goyal said, “This historic and structural agreement is a major step towards strengthening India-US relations and furthering our journey towards Developed India 2047. It also reflects the strong ties between the world's two largest democracies, they are natural partners and working together for shared prosperity.”

Expressing disappointment, he said that due to the uproar by Congress and other opposition parties including DMK, Trinamool Congress and Samajwadi Party, he was not allowed to give a statement on the trade deal in Parliament.
He said, he (Rahul Gandhi) has nothing to do with the progress of the country. I don't think any Indian citizen can agree with his delusional thinking. Is Rahul irritated by the millions and crores of rupees of investment that we are trying to bring into India?
