President’s rule removed from Manipur, Yumnam Khemchand takes oath as Chief Minister

President's rule has ended in Manipur. For this, the Home Ministry issued a notification. It was announced to end it with immediate effect. Along with this, the state has also got a new CM. Yumnam Khemchand has taken oath as Chief Minister. Manipur Governor Ajay Bhalla administered him the oath at Lok Bhavan.

62 year old Khemchand, belonging to Metai community, has been an MLA from Singjamei assembly seat and an engineer by profession. He was the minister of Municipal Administration and Housing Department in the Biren government. Along with this, he was a contender for the post of Chief Minister in 2022. Khemchand is considered close to RSS.

Legislative party leaders were elected yesterday

A meeting was held at BJP headquarters on Tuesday. In this, Khemchand Singh was elected the leader of the legislative party. The BJP high command had appointed National General Secretary Tarun Chugh as an observer for this election. Let us tell you that Govind Das and T Vishwajit Singh were at the forefront in the race for Chief Minister.

Govind Das is a 7-time MLA. He also has the support of Biren Singh. Let us tell you that the meeting of MLAs was earlier to be held in Imphal but the party MLAs belonging to the Kuki community wanted to hold a meeting with the central leadership in Delhi.

Conflict between Meitei and Kuki

In May 2023, caste violence occurred between the Meitei and Kuki castes. More than 260 people have died in this so far. Thousands of people became homeless. On February 13 last year, Biren Singh resigned from the post of CM. Then the central government imposed President's rule.

BJP has a total of 37 MLAs in Manipur, which has a 60-member assembly. NDA's allies include 6 MLAs from NPP and 5 from Naga People's Front (APF). For the first time, President's rule was imposed in Manipur for 6 months on February 13, 2025. Then in August 2025 it was extended for another six months.
