When it comes to name pronunciation, it's widely known that some extraordinarily complex and distinctive names exist.
Then there are the more familiar names, which most individuals have absolutely no difficulty whatsoever articulating aloud.
Nevertheless, occasionally it appears there's an overlap between the two and this is where complications arise, as a parent adopts a well-known name and chooses to modify the pronunciation - whilst maintaining the original spelling.
One woman has described an embarrassing predicament she encountered after mispronouncing a child's name.
Posting on TikTok, the nurse, identified solely as Lindsey, confessed that she struggles with names but didn't anticipate she could mangle the name Liam after spotting it on a patient's records.
She explained: "I'm a paediatric nurse and I'm from the deep, deep south, so I butcher everybody's name.
"If it's not something super simple like Ben or Sally, I'm gonna butcher it.
"So, I see a kid's name on our computer and I say 'Oh, Liam, I got this. L-I-A-M. Liam. Easy'.
"I go out, call the kid's name, nobody moves. Call him again. Nobody moves. Call him again nobody moves.
"Finally this mum stands up and says 'Do you mean 'Yum?'".
"And I say 'No, Liam?' and she said 'Yeah, it's short for William'."
Lindsey concludes the footage by performing a mind blown gesture, adding "boom".
Her video became viral, attracting over three million views and receiving more than 196,000 likes. Thousands of individuals also weighed in, with one stating: "My son's name was Liam. His new name is Yum."
Another responded: "As a mum of a Liam, I am perturbed."
Others started sharing unfortunate and comical names they'd encountered.
Someone else mentioned: "Had a student named Justin, last name Case. He said 'My mom thinks she has a sense of humour'.
"Had a patient named L-A, I called for LA. Mom quickly informed me it's pronounced Ladasha and did I not see the dash? Ummm ok," added a different user.
