According to the legend, once upon a time the glory of the gods in heaven was at its peak. Devraj Indra was immersed in opulence and luxury. He could not even remember his duties. One day sage Durvasa reached heaven. He was known for his angry nature. Devraj Indra did not show proper respect to the sage. Not only this, Dev Indra also insulted the sage.

Due to this, sage Durvasa became angry and cursed Indra. He told Indra that by being so engrossed in wealth and glory that you do not even remember your duties, all that will be snatched away from you. Then due to the curse of the sage, all the prosperity of heaven was destroyed. All the gods including Lord Indra became poor. Goddess Lakshmi left heaven and poverty took over. The power of the gods diminished. The demons started defeating them.

The gods became worried about the plight of heaven.

Seeing this plight of heaven, all the gods became worried and prayed to Lord Vishnu to liberate them from this crisis. After this Lord Vishnu advised the gods to churn the ocean. He told the gods that by drinking the nectar emanating from the churning of the ocean, they would become immortal and their power would also increase. After this the gods along with the demons churned the ocean.

At the end of the churning of the ocean, nectar emerged. Which Lord Vishnu in the form of Mohini gave to the gods to drink. This increased the power of the gods and they defeated the demons and regained control over heaven. The poverty that had spread in heaven due to the curse of the sage. She was overcome by the churning of the ocean and prosperity returned to heaven.
