The world's best place to retire to in 2026 has been named. It's a beautiful Southern European country, but it's not Spain or Portugal. The monthly magazine and website, International Living, recently released its 2026 Annual Global Retirement Index, which ranks countries based on their suitability for retirement. The outlet considers various categories, including climate, healthcare, cost of living, housing, and visas, and its index is based on more than 40 years of on-the-ground experience and in-depth reporting from its trusted network of expats and correspondents.
With the cost of living in Portugal and Spain climbing and visa rules becoming more restrictive, Greece has surged to the top, jumping from seventh place to be crowned the world's number one retirement destination for 2026. Jennifer Stevens, executive editor of International Living, said: "Greece's rise to number one marks a shift in Europe's retirement landscape. For years, Portugal and Spain led the way, but rising costs and visa changes have retirees looking elsewhere.
"Greece now offers a beautiful, welcoming, and affordable European base with accessible residency options and a lifestyle that feels rich in every sense."
One factor making Greece particularly attractive is the new update of the country's Golden Visa program this month, which allows foreigners to gain residency through a real estate investment of €250,000 (£215,000) making it among the most accessible programmes in Europe.
According to AnyResidence, Greek rental prices are around 146% lower than in the UK.
Beyond affordability, Greece delivers a rich cultural experience, an unhurried way of life, and a famously healthy and delicious Mediterranean diet, a combination that makes everyday living feel effortlessly rewarding. International Living Greece correspondent Leena Horner retired to the beautiful Greek island of Corfu about four years ago.
She wrote about her experience living in Greece: "Here, my mornings begin with coffee enjoyed on the terrace, and more frequently than not, they conclude in the presence of friends or with the soothing sound of waves drifting through the evening breeze. The pace of life here is relaxed, yet it is far from dull. It is consistent, communal, balanced, and unexpectedly rich."
Retirees moving to Greece are likely to enjoy a more active, outdoor-focused lifestyle thanks to its incredible climate. With more than 3,000 hours of sunshine each year, Greece ranks among the sunniest countries in Europe
From the historic streets of Athens to the peaceful beaches of the Cyclades, retirees can choose from bustling urban areas, breathtaking islands, or tranquil villages.
With the longest coastline in the Mediterranean Basin, stretching roughly 8,498 miles and dotted with thousands of islands, Greece is a place like no other.
