How did roses become a part of Valentine's Day? 

In Roman mythology, roses are closely associated with Aphrodite and Venus, the goddesses of love and beauty, respectively. The juxtaposition of the flower's features is in itself a reflection of love. The soft petals covered by protective thorns mirror the quality of love of being comfortable and all-consuming.
