There is going to be a new beginning in the matter of electricity in the capital Delhi. Under the new system, there will be a big relief to the electricity consumers in Delhi because consumers will now be able to buy and sell electricity among themselves. DERC has approved peer-to-peer electricity trading under the pilot project.
This scheme has been started as a pilot project by Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC). Under this, people will now be able to buy and sell electricity generated from solar panels to each other. According to DERC, this scheme will be implemented on a pilot basis for 6 months.
The objective of such a scheme is to provide consumers the benefit of cheap and clean electricity. Besides, major changes have to be made in the electricity system by promoting solar power. For this, it is being considered an important step in the energy sector in the capital Delhi.
Earlier, two days ago on Wednesday, Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission took an important decision and cleared the way for consumers to buy and sell electricity among themselves. The Commission allowed Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL) and BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) to launch a pilot project on peer-to-peer energy trading.
The initiative aims to empower prosumers – consumers who generate their own electricity from renewable sources like rooftop solar – to buy and sell excess electricity, effectively turning homes and commercial rooftops into mini power plants.
Officials related to the matter say that the pilot project is expected to start in North and South Delhi this month, in which about one thousand consumers will be included in each zone. “This will allow trading both within the discoms and also between Delhi and Uttar Pradesh as Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited is also participating in this initiative.” Discoms will showcase the project at the AI Summit to be held at Bharat Mandapam from 16 to 20 February next week.
