The Union Law Ministry told Parliament on Friday that in the last ten years, the office of the Chief Justice of India (CJI) has received 8,360 complaints against sitting judges. This information was given by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MP (MP) Matheswaran V.S. in the Lok Sabha on Friday. Given in response to a question. The MP had asked for a list of complaints related to corruption, sexual misconduct or other serious irregularities received against the judges of the High Court or the Supreme Court.

According to data received from the Supreme Court, Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal replied that 8,360 complaints were received between 2016-2025. Matheswaran also asked whether any action was taken on these complaints. However, that aspect was not addressed in the Law Ministry's reply. It also did not explain why there was no record of action taken on the complaints.

Know the record of complaints

Another question raised was whether the Central Government is aware of any system used by the Supreme Court to maintain a record or database of complaints received against High Court or Supreme Court judges regarding corruption, sexual misconduct or other serious irregularities.

In response, it was said that the Chief Justice of India and the Chief Justice of the High Court are capable of taking complaints against judges as per the in-house procedure. The reply said that complaints received against members of the Higher Judiciary through the Centralized Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS) or through any other means are sent to the CJI or the Chief Justice of the concerned High Court.

The minister also did not respond to Matheswaran's question on whether the government was planning to issue guidelines or take steps to ensure systematic recording, monitoring and accountability of complaints against members of the Higher Judiciary.
