Story

The story of the film revolves around Parima (Kani Kusruti), who is a teacher by profession. She is living a happy life in a metropolis like Delhi with her husband Vinay (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub) and young son Dhruv (Advik Jaiswal). But one night while returning from a school party, the wheel of time turns in such a way that everything changes. Five men kidnap her, gang-rape her in a car and throw her half-dead on the railway tracks. Why is this film named 'Asi'? You will know this after watching the film.

Morning comes, Parima reaches the hospital and the accused are caught and from here the real battle begins, the court battle. Lawyer Raavi (Taapsee Pannu) takes charge on Parima's behalf. To know what happens next, you will have to go and watch 'Assi' in the theatre.

How is the movie?

Is 'Assi' just a courtroom drama? This fight is not limited to the court only. This is a fight about a mother's broken self-esteem, a child's snatched childhood and a society that looks for opportunities to blame the victim.

'Assi' is not a 'popcorn movie' which you watch for fun. This is a bitter but necessary medicine, which is difficult to swallow. The very first scene of the film is so disturbing that you will become uncomfortable in your seat. Anubhav Sinha has not tried to dissolve it in any syrup at all. Every 20 minutes in the film, a slate appears on the screen, reminding you that while you are sitting in the theater's AC watching the film, another rape has been reported outside. This truth that appears on the screen every 20 minutes shakes us to the core.

Directing and writing

Often in Bollywood, actors get crores and writers get very little. But after watching 'Assi' it is understood why the writer of this film has been paid the highest fee. The magic that Gaurav Solanki has created with his pen is praiseworthy. The duo of 'Anubhav Sinha' and 'Gaurav Solanki' has shown the courage to present the unfiltered truth before us. The dialogues of the film are such that they destroy the system without shouting.

The courtroom has not been made a 'film' in the film. Here the lawyers do not shout or scream, but whenever the voice becomes a little loud, the judge immediately reminds them of 'decorum'. This is the beauty of this film, its reality. However, the 'Chhatri Man' sub-plot in the middle seems a bit meandering and the pace of the film slows down at some places, but Gaurav Solanki The writing does not let you go astray. He has proved that a strong story is the real hero of the film.

acting

If we talk about acting, Kani Kusruti is the life of this film. The way he has lived the pain of Parima, it is sure to bring tears to your eyes. The silence on his face outweighs thousands of dialogues. Taapsee Pannu is once again seen setting the lawyer's gown on fire. Her performance is 'commanding' and shows why she is considered the face of serious cinema.

A surprising work has been done by small child Advik Jaiswal. He has portrayed the mental conflict of a rape victim's child with great innocence and depth. Apart from these, the army of veterans like Naseeruddin Shah, Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra, Revati and Seema Pahwa have given that 'emotional weight' to the film which is rarely seen. Every character fits in its place.

Music and background score

Although we do not talk much about music, but in this film without songs, the background music given by Ranjit Barot is another strong pillar of it. After 'Mardaani 3', this is his another best work, which doubles the stress and tension of the scenes. This music has been used here not just for entertainment but to make the atmosphere even more serious.

to see or not to see

In fact, it is often said about films that films are the mirror of society. If you are fond of real cinema, if you want to be face to face with the bitter reality of the system and society, if you want to see the incomparable acting of Taapsee Pannu and Kani Kusruti, then this film is for you. But if you just like entertainment and dance-singing movies, then this movie will disturb you, make you think and maybe even give you sleepless nights.

Overall, 'Assi' is not just a film, but it is a 'reality check'. Even in the year 2026, if we are standing at the same point where women's safety is a big question, then it is not only the fault of the system but also ours. Watch this for the Parima that is dying every 20 minutes in some corner of this country. When the lights come on after the movie ends, you come out a different person. This film reminds us that unless there is safety on the roads, all our claims of progress are hollow. In the mirror shown by Anubhav Sinha through 'Assi', we clearly see the ugly face of ourselves and our society. Now it is up to you whether you turn a blind eye or become a part of the change. This film is 4 stars from our side.
