Mumbai: Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to increase the number of IPL matches in the year 2028. There is a possibility that a total of 94 IPL matches will be held in Ramadwa in the year 2028. However, there are no possibilities of increasing the IPL team in future. In the year 2022, the number of IPL matches was increased to 74 and two new teams were included. Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants franchises became part of the league in the year 2022. Initially, it was proposed to keep the number of IPL stages at 84 in 2025. However, this proposal was put aside keeping in mind the problems of the tournament window and broadcasters. IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal had said that BCCI is seriously considering increasing the number of matches in IPL 2028 to 94. He had declared the IPL being played this year a success.

He further said that, we are discussing with ICC, we have discussed in-house in BCCI. Keeping this in mind, we will have to seriously talk about how the interest of fans is changing in relation to bilateral and ICC plans, franchise cricket and T20 cricket. We want a bigger window. We are eyeing matches from 74 to 84 and 94. So that all the teams get a chance to play at their home ground as well as outside. He further said that a lot of cricket is played. We came to Australia to play the Test series and played the Champions Trophy, after which we are coming to play IPL. Keeping in mind more cricket, it was not appropriate to increase the number of IPL matches to 84 instead of 74 in 2025. So, when we feel appropriate, we will take a decision to increase the number of matches.
