Holashtak 2026: Holashtak has started today, Tuesday, 24th February. Any auspicious work is considered prohibited during this period. There are two mythological stories behind this, one of which is that in ancient times, Mahadev in anger had burnt Kamadeva to ashes. Due to which the balance of the universe got disturbed and the planets became furious for eight days. Since then the tradition of Holashtak is considered. Another story is to Hiranyakashyap, Holika and Prahlad. After this Holika is burnt and Holi is celebrated.
What should not be done on 8 days of Holashtak?
It is believed that in these 8 days, 16 rituals including marriage, engagement, naming, mundan should not be performed. Buying a new vehicle, property, house or starting a new business is also not considered auspicious. House construction and house entry should also be avoided till Holika Dahan. According to astrological belief, one should avoid changing jobs. If necessary, advice can be taken by showing the horoscope. Activities like Havan and Yagya are also considered prohibited.
What should be done in these 8 days?
Chanting, penance and meditation during these 8 days is considered best. Then after worshiping Lord Vishnu Hari for eight days, the mantra ‘Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevaya’ can be chanted. Besides, the importance of worshiping Shiva and chanting the mantra ‘Om Namah Shivay’ has also been explained. Remedies for planetary peace can be taken with the advice of an astrologer.
