The Government of Haryana has announced a large-scale land acquisition initiative through its e-Bhoomi portal, aiming to facilitate planned urban development across multiple cities in the state. According to details shared by the Chief Minister’s Office, the programme involves purchasing land with the consent of landowners to create space for residential, commercial and institutional projects.

As part of the plan, nearly 1.67 lakh acres of land are proposed to be acquired across 69 cities. Officials said the initiative is designed to streamline land transactions digitally, allowing landowners to participate voluntarily through the online portal rather than traditional acquisition methods.

In the first phase, the state intends to purchase around 40,000 acres in 13 cities. This initial rollout is expected to help authorities assess implementation challenges and infrastructure needs before expanding the process to other urban centres. The last date for participation in the scheme has been set as April 30, 2026.

The government has indicated that the acquired land will be used for planned development, including housing, commercial hubs and institutional facilities. Urban planners note that such measures could help address growing demand for organised townships and reduce unregulated expansion around cities. However, they also point out that the success of the programme will depend on transparent valuation, fair compensation and timely execution.

Land aggregation through digital platforms is increasingly being adopted by states to simplify procedures and maintain land records. Observers say that while voluntary acquisition may reduce disputes, consistent communication with stakeholders will be essential to ensure trust and participation. Further details regarding city-wise allocation and development timelines are expected to emerge as the first phase progresses.
