A traditional seaside town with an award-winning pier has been named the best in the UK. It is famous for its charming atmosphere, sandy beaches, colourful beach huts and bustling high street.
Southwold, in East Suffolk, has recently been named as the number one UK seaside town by outdoor enthusiasts at The Camping and Caravanning Club. The organisation cited the town's impressive 623ft pier and working lighthouse among the reasons for ranking it in top spot. They also noted that, unlime some seaside resorts, Southwold is a great place to visit throughout the year.
The Camping and Caravanning Club said: "Head to the charming Suffolk Heritage Coast to explore the traditional seaside town of Southwold. Its sandy beach, working lighthouse and award-winning pier are just a short drive away from our Kessingland Club Site.
"Food and drink are a focal point here with a tour of Adnams Brewery, adjacent to the lighthouse which is a must during your visit. Southwold is a great destination year-round, whether you plan to visit during the summer for an ice cream or in the winter for blustery walks and cosy pub lunches."
Southwold Pier, which was rebuilt in 2001, has won a number of awards, including the National Piers Society's Pier of the Year and Best Seaside Attraction. The pier features a range of arcades and quirky, modern shops.
Southwold Beach is popular among tourists, featuring a mix of shingle. It is lined with iconic and colourful beach huts which are always busy in the summer.
Southwold also still has a working lighthouse. Standing at 101ft tall, the landmark rises above the area and offers great views of the town and out to sea.
The town has been dubbed "Chelsea-on-Sea" as its known for its upmarket atmosphere and vibrant high street. The area is brimming with independent shops and eateries.
The local authority has consistently blocked efforts by chains including Costa and Waterstones to set up premises in the area. However, Waterstones was ultimately allowed to launch, on condition it maintained the identity of the previous business, Southwold Books.
There are plenty of other attractions across Southwold, including the Southwold Museum and teh Sailors' Reading Room. The The Electric Picture Palace, a charming 70-seat boutique cinema, is also very popular as it recreates an Edwardian movie-going experience.
The Suffolk Coast describes Southwold as the "perfect year-round destination". It adds that the town is ideal for families and couples to enjoy.
