With just six weeks remaining in the season, the Detroit Pistons reinforced their status as the team to beat in the Eastern Conference with a dominant 106-92 victory over the Orlando Magic. Cade Cunningham delivered another spectacular performance, finishing with 29 points and 11 assists, leading the Pistons to a comfortable win inside Kia Centre.
The Orlando Magic have continued to struggle in the second half of games since the All-Star break. Despite leading by as much as nine points in the first half, Orlando could only manage a seven-point lead at halftime, even while limiting Detroit to 38% shooting and forcing them to miss 16 of 17 three-point attempts. Paolo Banchero and Jett da Silva led the charge for Orlando, helping them match Detroit’s physicality and getting to the free-throw line 22 times.
However, Orlando's inability to capitalise on its chances allowed Detroit to turn the tide in the second half. After the Magic briefly tied the game at 83 with just over 10 minutes left, the Pistons responded with a 10-0 run, never looking back.
The key differences in the second half were Detroit's dominance in the paint and defensive pressure, despite struggling with their outside shooting. The Pistons outscored Orlando by 22 points in the paint in the second half, finishing 16-of-25 from the field inside, including 10-of-12 at the rim. Orlando, on the other hand, managed just five made field goals out of 13 attempts in the paint, including a disappointing 4-of-11 at the rim.
Detroit also took control of the turnover battle, finishing plus-six in turnovers and plus-11 in points off turnovers. This defensive intensity helped the Pistons dominate a Magic team that couldn’t find ways to exploit any advantages offensively.
This loss served as a reminder of how far the Orlando Magic still are from competing at the highest level. Despite their strong start, the Magic couldn’t match the Pistons’ physicality for a full 48 minutes. Orlando's defence, once a standout feature in previous seasons, was inconsistent, especially in the second half.
Detroit’s win marks a sobering reality for the Magic, who have regressed after an encouraging start to their rebuild. This 14-point loss underscores the gap between the two teams, a stark reminder that Orlando still has much to improve on before it can seriously compete in the East.
