Remember Shah Rukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor’s 2011 film Ra.One? Directed by Anubhav Sinha, the film also starred Armaan Verma, Shahana Goswami, Tom Wu, Dalip Tahil and Satish Shah in supporting roles. Be it SRK’s double role or Kareena’s moves in Chammak Challo, Ra.One was a hit amongst fans and became the third highest-grossing Indian Hindi language film of 2011 domestically.

Now, 15 years after Ra.One, Anubhav Sinha has revisited his experience of working with Shah Rukh Khan, admitting he once assumed the superstar understood audience preferences better than he did.

Anubhav Sinha opens up on working with SRK in Ra.One

In a recent interview with Zoom, Anubhav revealed that he once relied heavily on the superstar’s instincts to understand audience preferences, but says he now looks back on that phase differently.

“Main Shah Rukh se bahut zyada enamoured bhi tha mujhe lagta tha isko humse zyada aata hai ki audience ko kya pasand hai. To kai martaba aisa hua hoga (I was very enamoured by Shah Rukh Khan. I used to think that he understands more than us about what the audience likes. So there must have been many instances when that happened),” Anubhav said.

Anubhav then revealed that he did make decisions influenced by Shah Rukh Khan. "Achha lekin hua hoga ki maine kuch aise decision liye kyunki wo bol raha tha aur mujhe laga ye isko to pata hai. Isko to 100% pata hai. Aise sochna nahi chahiye tha (But yes, it must have happened that I might have taken some decisions because he was saying so, and I believed SRK knows best. I thought he definitely knows everything. I probably shouldn’t have thought that way),” Anubhav added.

Today, Anubhav acknowledges that placing unquestioned faith, even in a star like Shah Rukh Khan, may not have been the most balanced or wise approach in hindsight.

Ra.One was well-received by audience and even won the Filmfare and National Film Awards for Best Special Effects. The visual effects were done by Red Chillies VFX, owned by Gauri Khan and Shah Rukh Khan.

Reportedly, Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Asin had initially been considered for the lead female role, but the filmmakers went ahead with Kareena.
