Original herbal colors are made from natural ingredients. No chemical of any kind is added to it. Whenever you buy packet herbal color, the brand has given a list of all the ingredients behind it. If there is mention of flowers, turmeric, sandalwood, spinach, beetroot or other natural things then the color is herbal. But if difficult chemical names like lead oxide, chromium, copper sulphate etc. are written on the packet then it is not herbal colour. Chemicals have been adulterated in it.
You can also identify herbal color by its fragrance. In fact, real herbal colors have a natural mild, earthy or floral scent. But if the color has a strong or strange chamomile smell, then it may be fake.
Herbal color is made from natural ingredients, for which it is processed from drying to grinding. This makes the herbal color very soft and light. But if the color is too bright, sticky or granular then it may be adulterated with chemicals.
Whenever you buy herbal color, do not use it directly on Holi. Rather, first do a patch test by adding a little color to a small part of your hand. If there is no reaction for 10-15 minutes then the color is real. But if there is a problem like burning, itching or irritation then the color may be adulterated.
Choose brands that are known for Ayurvedic or natural products and have certified labels (such as organic or ISO). Avoid buying unbranded or loosely sold colors.
