Minab: As many as 160 girl students were killed and several others were injured after massive explosions hit an elementary school in the city of Minab in southern Iran on Saturday. This is the first confirmed report of causalities in Iran after United States of America and Israel launched joint airstrikes on Iran. The name of the school is Shajareye Tayabeh, located in the Hormozgan Province.
A missile also hit a clinic near the school, the Governor of Minab Mohammad Radmehr said. He added that rescue operations are underway and the security situation in the city was under control.
The school suffered extensive damage following the strike. Visuals from the scene showed people recovering children's bags from the rubbles. Blocks of concrete were seen lying on desks and benches in classrooms.
The attack comes just days after US President Donald Trump gave a 10-day ultimatum to Iran to finalise the nuclear deal.
Iran's Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi condemned the attack, calling it a murder of innocent children. “It was bombed in broad daylight, when packed with young pupils. Dozens of innocent children have been murdered at this site alone.”
He added, “These crimes against the Iranian People will not go unanswered.”
President Donald Trump announced the operation against Iran via a video message, claiming his goal is to defend American people and eliminate imminent threats from the Iranian regime. The Pentagon officially called the operation ‘Operation Epic Fury’. Meanwhile, Israel called its part 'Operation Lion's Roar'.
In a video address, Trump said, “Bombs will be dropping everywhere…When we are finished, take over your government. It will be yours to take. This will be, probably, your only chance for generations.”
"We will ensure that Iran does not obtain a nuclear weapon."
Trump further said that he will not put up with Iran's actions any longer. The strikes follow months of planning amid tensions over Iran's nuclear program and ballistic missiles.
