Britons nationwide are struggling amid the persistent cost of living crisis and additional domestic challenges. However, one particular town across the UK has acquired notoriety as Britain's 'angriest'.
Tavistock, situated in Devon, is frequently labelled "Britain's angriest town", primarily because its residents possess a passionate and successful history of mobilising against major corporate chains to protect their local independent shops and cultural heritage.
This moniker gathered momentum after numerous prominent local disputes. The town attracted national attention for removing a McDonald's outlet in the early 2000s, which inhabitants felt was incompatible with the town's distinctive character.
In 2019, the label resurfaced when locals led an impassioned and successful campaign to prevent the development of a Premier Inn on a central car park, concerned it would jeopardise local bed and breakfasts and independent enterprises.
The designation has been further reinforced by social media personalities, including Phil Carr, who use the phrase in a light-hearted or satirical fashion to illustrate the residents' outspoken resistance to transformation and corporate giants.
In one of his Instagram reels about the town, Phil - who boasts a following exceeding 73,000 on the platform - revealed his experiences of visiting there. He jested that, given the town's aversion to large corporations, he expected it to be quaint and "traditional".
However, he admitted he was "wrong", branding the townsfolk "hypocrites" as it boasted big-name brands like Tesco, Boots, Wetherspoons and Lidl.
"God knows where McDonald's and Premier Inn went wrong," he commented.
During his visit to the town, Phil noted that the Tavistock Museum was closed, leaving him with just 'the only other thing to do there' - The Viaduct Walk.
This scenic trail follows a section of the decommissioned London and South West Railway line, which ceased operations in 1968. It officially forms part of Drake's Trail, a 21-mile walking and cycling route connecting Tavistock to Plymouth.
The walk is particularly popular due to its panoramic views over the town's rooftops, the historic Abbey, and the distant tors of Dartmoor.
Phil dubbed The Viaduct Walk as Tavistock's "main attraction", suggesting that "to any other town, it would just be one mile of sh*tty disused railway" used by locals as a shortcut, but for Tavistock, it represents "as good as it gets".
Despite the content creator's dig at the town, the post attracted over 15,000 likes from followers.
One responded: "I used to love the Maccies in Tavistock as it was closer than Plymouth."
Meanwhile another added: "You know what? It's nice that they can protest and get what they want. Good job Devon."
A third chimed in: "Tavistock is a lovely town. Has everything you need and a brilliant market behind the town hall."
Meanwhile, a fourth declared the town their "favourite place to visit".
