CWI Takes Action for Team Travel

Cricket West Indies (CWI) has arranged commercial travel for its players currently in India, due to ongoing delays with charter flights organized by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

CWI stated that typically, the ICC manages travel and accommodation for teams participating in both the men's and women's ICC World Cups. However, the charter flight meant to transport the West Indies and South Africa teams faced multiple delays.

CWI Prioritizes Player Welfare

The West Indies squad remained in India for nine days after their matches, waiting for travel confirmations. CWI highlighted that the uncertainty surrounding the ICC's charter flight, influenced by global tensions and aviation regulations, was causing distress among players and support staff.

"To ensure the safety and well-being of its players and support staff, Cricket West Indies informed the ICC that it was no longer sensible to wait for the uncertain charter arrangements," the board stated.

CWI has since made several efforts, in collaboration with players and partners, to secure commercial flights for the squad's return. Some players and staff have already left, while the rest are expected to depart on Tuesday and Wednesday (March 11).

Players Express Discontent Over Delays

West Indies head coach Daren Sammy shared his frustrations about the delays on social media. Several South African players, including Quinton de Kock and David Miller, also expressed their dissatisfaction regarding the extended wait.

"I just wanna go home," Sammy posted on X, adding in another post, "At least provide an update, let us know something. Today, tomorrow, next week. It's been 5 days since our last match on March 1."

Logistical Challenges and Ongoing Communication

CWI confirmed on Thursday that they have been in continuous communication with players, management, and the ICC about the team's return following their defeat to India.

They noted that international airspace restrictions in the Gulf region have complicated travel plans, but CWI is taking all necessary precautions to ensure the team's safe return to the Caribbean. "CWI has maintained constant dialogue with players, team management, and the ICC since their last match against India. Despite the complexities and fluidity of the situation due to security concerns in the Gulf region, CWI assures the public that every measure is being taken for the team's safe return to the Caribbean," the board stated.
