Kolkata: A tragic incident unfolded at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on Friday, where a man lost his life after becoming trapped in an elevator.

The victim, identified as Arup Bandopadhyay, was a resident of Dum Dum, located on the northern outskirts of the city. At the time of the incident, his family and friends were protesting within the hospital premises.

Reports indicate that Bandopadhyay was attempting to reach the trauma care center located on the fifth floor when he became stuck in the elevator. His son is currently receiving treatment at the same facility.

According to relatives, there was no elevator operator present during the incident. They claimed that Bandopadhyay was trapped for over an hour without any hospital staff available to assist or reactivate the elevator.

Hospital officials have stated that they will investigate the complaints raised and address the concerns surrounding this incident.

As of the latest updates, the hospital has not provided any explanation regarding the circumstances leading to the man's death. A significant police presence from the local Tala Police station has been deployed to the hospital, attempting to mediate with the grieving family and friends.

This incident comes on the heels of previous controversies surrounding R.G. Kar, including the horrific rape and murder of a female doctor on the premises in August 2024. Additionally, investigations into financial irregularities at the hospital have raised concerns, with the former principal, accused of orchestrating these irregularities, currently in custody.
