Tezzbuzz Desk- A big change has emerged for the users of photo-video sharing platform Instagram. Meta has announced that end-to-end encrypted chats will be discontinued on the platform from May 8, 2026.

After this decision, personal conversations of users will not be completely safe as before, due to which a new debate has started regarding privacy.

What is end-to-end encryption?

End-to-end encryption is a security system in which only the sender and the recipient can read the message. Even the company running the platform cannot access these messages. For this reason it is considered the strongest protection of online privacy. After the removal of this feature, the privacy of chats will not be the same as before.

Launched in 2023, why is it being discontinued now?

Instagram started this feature in December 2023. This was part of Meta’s strategy to strengthen privacy. But according to the company, very few users were using this feature. For this reason, a decision has been taken to close it, so that the platform can be developed in a new direction.

Messages sent after May 8, 2026 will not be encrypted. The company will be able to access the chats when needed. Users will get notifications for old encrypted chats. It has been advised to download important messages and media.

Privacy vs Security: New debate erupts

After this decision, the debate regarding privacy and security has intensified. Many experts are considering it as a threat to the privacy of users. At the same time, some governments and security agencies believe that encryption makes it difficult to track wrong activities. In such a situation, Meta may in future push users towards platforms like WhatsApp, where end-to-end encryption is already the default.

This change raises many questions about the future of digital privacy. In the coming times, it will be important to see how users take this decision and how tech companies strike a balance between privacy and security.
