Harish Rana, the first person in India permitted for passive euthanasia, passed away on Tuesday at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, reports said. Rana has reportedly been in a coma for nearly 13 years. He had recently been granted permission for passive euthanasia by the Supreme Court of India.
Rana was admitted to AIIMS and placed in the palliative care ward, where he was given comfort-focused treatment during his final days.
How and when the process began
He was admitted on March 14, following which his liquid diet was stopped on March 15. From March 17 onwards, even water intake was discontinued as part of the passive euthanasia process, in which life-support systems and nutritional support are gradually withdrawn.
Doctors ensured that he remained free from pain by administering regular medication and necessary care. The primary aim of the process was to allow a peaceful and dignified passing without suffering.
After receiving approval from the Supreme Court, a specialized team of doctors closely monitored his condition. Having remained without food and water for about a week, Harish Rana eventually passed away, bringing to a close a highly complex and sensitive case.
Emotional Video Goes Viral
Before being brought to AIIMS, an emotional video of Harish Rana from his home in Ghaziabad surfaced online. In the video, a member of the Brahma Kumaris is seen applying a tilak on his forehead and gently saying, “Forgive everyone, ask forgiveness from all, and go to sleep… it’s okay.” The deeply moving clip left many people emotional and touched hearts across social media.
