The government has taken a big step regarding the increasing deepfake and AI content on social media. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has implemented new rules for platforms like Instagram, Facebook and X. Now it will be necessary to clearly label photos, videos and audios created by AI. That means the content created with AI will have to be shown that it has been created with AI. Besides, strict time limits have also been set for speedy removal of illegal content.
Under the new rules, platforms like Instagram, Facebook and YouTube will have to clearly identify every AI-generated content. This includes photos, videos and audios. Along with this, it will also be necessary to add traceable metadata to such content, so that users can understand whether the content is genuine or created by AI. This step has been taken to prevent fake and misleading information.
The government has also made strict rules regarding removal of content. Now after receiving orders from any court or government agency, social media platforms will have to remove illegal content within 3 hours. This rule has been specifically implemented to rapidly stop deepfakes, misleading information and objectionable content. This is expected to help in making the online space safe.
MeitY has directed platforms to adopt technical measures to prevent AI content that is obscene, misleading or misuses someone's identity. Strict action will be taken especially on objectionable content related to children and non-consensual personal content. Additionally, users will also be informed that creating or sharing such content may result in legal action.
