The weather is gradually warming up across the UK, and people will be keen to get out into their garden to cut the lawn. The weekend provides the perfect chance to do so, but gardeners are being warned to avoid mowing their lawn at certain times on Sunday.
Untimely lawn mowing can be classified as a "statutory nuisance" under the Environmental Protection Act 1990. This can lead to an official complaint and possible legal action, so it's important to be aware of the best times to cut your grass. As well as remaining within the legal boundaries, it also limits disruption to your neighbours.
According to East Coast Fencing, a garden supplies provider, people should avoid mowing their lawn before 10am and after 7pm on Sunday. This differs from weekday guidance, where it is generally acceptable to cut your grass between 8am and 8pm.
East Coast Fencing said: "The general rule of thumb is to avoid mowing your lawn during early mornings and late evenings, especially on weekends. While there isn't a nationwide law specifying exact times, guidelines are typically enforced by councils under noise nuisance laws."
The company added: "During weekends, stricter noise rules may apply due to the majority of residential homes being occupied throughout the day.
"For instance, many councils recommend no lawn mowing before 9am on Saturdays and 10am on Sundays, with a cut-off time of 7pm. These specific timings may vary depending on local council noise regulations, so checking their advice is strongly recommended."
However, there are some exceptions depending on where you live. If you live in a detached property with a large area of land then it's unlikely your neighbours will be impacted by your mowing.
But if you live in a residential area with close neighbours, it remains important to abide by the guidelines. Mowing early or late on a Sunday can cause tension.
East Coast Fencing added: "Seasonal considerations also play a role. During the summer months, daylight extends well into the evening, and many individuals find themselves mowing later due to longer periods of sunlight. However, councils often encourage abiding by the same timeframes year-round, irrespective of seasonal advantages."
Likewise, your model of lawnmower also plays a role. If you have a quieter or electric mower, it is more acceptable to cut your grass before 10am or after 7pm on a Sunday.
