Six-time world champion and Olympic medallist Mary Kom has revealed she is considering a transition into professional boxing as she looks to extend her illustrious career.
The 43-year-old, who made history by becoming the first Indian woman boxer to win an Olympic medal at the 2012 London Olympics, said age restrictions have ended her journey in amateur boxing, but new opportunities may lie ahead.
Reflecting on her career, Mary Kom said winning six World Championship titles remains one of her greatest achievements. “I have reached a stage where age limits prevent me from competing further in amateur boxing for the country, but professional boxing is now an option,” she said on the sidelines of the Sundays on Cycle event.
She added that she is taking time to carefully evaluate the move. “I am working hard and trying to make a comeback to show people what I am still capable of,” she said.
Despite contemplating a new chapter, Mary Kom continues to stay deeply involved in nurturing young talent through her academy in Manipur. She admitted that the ongoing challenges in the state sometimes make it difficult to be physically present, but she remains committed.
“I stay connected with my academy even when I’m away, managing things through calls. My goal is to remain fit and active for as long as possible, regardless of age,” she said.
