As we head into spring, lots of people are looking for easy methods to ensure their lawn looks healthy and green. However, little you may know, there's a simple technique you can use to transform your garden and you only need to grab a simple item to pull it off.
Experts share all sorts of tricks people can use in spring to ensure their lawns look as perfect as can be, but completing one gardening task in April can make all the difference to how your garden looks throughout the rest of the summer. By following the advice, you'll learn just what an impact it can have.
It's not the only change you can make either. There's another simple job you can carry out to make your lawn look greener too.
Senior Horticultural Content Manager at Fothergill's Pim Dickson recently explained what people need to do. Pim is someone you may want to listen to, as the brand has thousands of followers on social media.
You need to act now if you want to see great results. It's crucial to step into action during the spring months.
Pim said: "Think of lawn feed like a good breakfast; it sets your grass up for success. A spring feed will help repair any bald patches, encourage lusher growth and bring back that vibrant green colour that makes a garden look properly cared for.
"Re-seed any bald patches that raking may have exposed. Simply broadcast a few handfuls of lawn seed over the area that need a little help. This time of year, it should only require watering if we happen to have a prolonged dry spell and the ground looks like it might dry out.
"If you have a lot of birds visit your garden, then it may be sensible to hang up some deterrents to prevent them eating the seed and seedlings. Follow these straightforward steps, and you'll have a lawn that's ready for summer, whether that's family barbecues, kids playing or simply somewhere nice to look at with your morning cuppa."
He also shared some tips on cutting grass too, adding: "When you're itching to get the mower out for the first time, resist the urge to scalp it. Keep those blades set high, and your grass will thank you for it.
"Cutting too short puts stress on the grass as it recovers from winter. Instead, gradually lower the cutting height over several weeks. Your reward will be stronger roots and a thicker lawn."
How to use itTo use grass seed in the best way, you need to start by preparing in the soil. Loosen the top by two to four inches and clear away any debris.
You also need to level the surface before you spread the seed evenly using a spreader or by hand. Ideally, you then want to cover it with a light layer of soil or straw.
It's important to keep the area moist by watering it daily until it's established. You also need to stay off the grass for a few weeks while the seeds work their magic.
They key is not to use too much, as too much seed can result in weak, competitive grass growth. However, when used correctly, it can lead to a thicker lawn and can also aid repairs.
If you use it twice a year, you should also notice a much greener colour. In time, it can also help to fight off weeds.
