Bengaluru: Actor Darshan, an accused in the Renukaswamy murder case from Chitradurga, has moved the Karnataka High Court seeking directions to the Centre to take action against media channels allegedly violating court orders by broadcasting details related to the case.
The petition came up for hearing before the single-judge bench of Justice Sachin Shankar Magadum.
In his plea, Darshan has sought directions to the Central government to initiate action against television channels that are allegedly violating the court’s restraint orders by airing details of the Renukaswamy murder case.
The High Court directed the Centre to state its position on the matter.
Responding on behalf of the Central government, Additional Solicitor General Aravind Kamath told the court that a decision on what action would be taken regarding the relief sought in the petition would be informed by Monday.
Taking this on record, the bench adjourned the hearing to April 6.
According to the petition, some news channels are allegedly recreating court proceedings and crime scenes using graphics and AI-based animations. It has also been alleged that the channels are conducting discussions based on evidence recorded by the trial court.
The petition states that such broadcasts amount to a clear violation of the restraint orders issued by the High Court and the City Civil Court in 2024.
Darshan has requested the court to direct the Central government to take action against media outlets that are allegedly violating the court’s orders.
