Summer Eye Safety Tips: The intense summer sun can take a severe toll on people. The sun's rays bring scorching heat, which also impacts overall health. Sunlight contains ultraviolet (UV) rays, which are considered harmful to the skin. During the summer season, with the combination of bright sunlight and rising temperatures, the intensity of these UV rays increases significantly. While people are generally vigilant about the effects of the sun on their skin—often applying sunscreen—very few realize that UV rays can be equally dangerous for the eyes. Prolonged exposure to sunlight without adequate protection can compromise eye health.

Dr. Tushar Grover, Medical Director and Refractive Surgeon at the Vision Eye Center in New Delhi, advises people to avoid spending excessive time in the harsh sunlight during the summer months. The sun's ultraviolet rays can cause damage to the eyes during this season. These rays can affect everything from the cornea—the outer surface of the eye—to the internal lens. Excessive exposure to UV rays can lead to a condition known as photokeratitis, essentially a "sunburn of the eye." Symptoms typically include irritation, redness, watery eyes, and blurred vision. Additionally, dust and dirt can often enter the eyes, creating conditions conducive to infections.

According to Dr. Grover, intense sunlight can also damage the retina—the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye—potentially leading to a gradual deterioration of vision. Long-term exposure to UV rays may also increase the risk of developing cataracts. Children and the elderly are particularly sensitive to the effects of UV rays; therefore, they need to exercise extra caution during the summer season. The sun is at its most intense during the midday hours; it is advisable to avoid going outdoors during this time, or at least limit your outdoor excursions to the bare minimum. Spending too much time in the sun can have detrimental effects not only on the eyes but on other bodily organs as well.

The question now remains: how can we protect our eyes from damage during the summer? In response, the doctor stated that several simple measures can be adopted during the summer season to protect the eyes from UV rays. Most importantly, one should wear sunglasses with UV protection when stepping outdoors. Additionally, wearing a wide-brimmed hat or cap is beneficial, as it prevents direct sunlight from falling on the eyes. If you must spend time outdoors, try to stay in the shade. Furthermore, it is essential to frequently wash your eyes with cool water and stay hydrated to prevent dryness. If you experience persistent irritation, redness, or changes in vision, consult an eye specialist immediately to ensure timely and appropriate treatment.
