The season two finale of High Potential has left viewers eagerly anticipating what comes next.

The latest run of Disney+'s hugely popular crime drama has concluded on a dramatic cliffhanger, with the fate of a key character left hanging in the balance and a host of mysteries still unresolved.

The show was created by Drew Goddard, who previously worked on productions including The Good Place, Lost and Netflix's Daredevil. Goddard also wrote the screenplay for the recent blockbuster sci-fi adaptation Project Hail Mary.

High Potential is based on the French-Belgian series Haut Potentiel Intellectuel (HPI). Much like that show's premise, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Kaitlin Olson portrays Morgan reports the Mirror.

She plays a single mother with a remarkable intellect, whose unorthodox talent for cracking cases leads to an unlikely yet formidable partnership with a seasoned, by-the-book detective.

Olson is joined by Daniel Sunjata as Detective Karadec, Javicia Leslie as Daphne, Deniz Akdeniz as Lev "Oz" Ozdil, Amirah J as Ava, Matthew Lamb as Elliot, Steve Howey as Captain Nick Wagner and Judy Reyes as Selena.

So what unfolded in High Potential's season two finale, and what might it mean for a third series? Here's everything you need to know.

What happened in High Potential season 2 cliff hanger finale?

Beginning like any typical instalment, the principal investigation centred on a corpse found beside a swimming pool at an upmarket hotel. The establishment happened to be where Detective Karadec's fiancée Lucia is employed.

The deceased was one half of a celebrity home renovation duo who discovered herself at the same location where her spouse was staying for extramarital activities. As the probe continues, it emerges that the murder was never intended, though the husband was meant to be subjected to blackmail.

Matters dramatically intensified when the wife appeared at the hotel room without warning, triggering a confrontation and leaving her fatally injured. It transpires that the fraudster was Lucia's former partner and she assisted him in obtaining entry to the room, indicating she bore some culpability in the death. Her romance with Karadec seems to have ended permanently as he observed her being processed for imprisonment.

Meanwhile, there were notable progressions in the narrative thread that has been running since season 1. Morgan has been attempting to uncover all this time what truly happened to her ex-husband Roman.

Captain Nick Wagner reveals fresh details from the elusive and still questionable Willa. She now alleges that Roman was collaborating with corrupt FBI agent Lila Flynn. Nevertheless, it is believed that Roman murdered the agent after she chose to confess. As if that were not enough, a mysterious figure appeared in the background of Ava's art show. Fans are already speculating that this could be Roman himself, keeping tabs on his daughter from a distance.

Towards the end of the episode, Wagner rings Morgan to inform her he has a meeting with someone with a possible FBI connection, with the details sent to him via text from his father. Morgan agrees to meet him there, but upon her arrival, she discovers Nick slumped on a bench, gravely injured and bleeding heavily, apparently from a gunshot wound to the back.

Does Nick Wagner die in High Potential?

The outlook is grim. While viewers were not shown definitively whether Nick survives the attack, the latest casting news raises considerable doubt.

It could spell bad news for fans, as both Deadline and Entertainment Weekly report that the season 2 finale marked the last appearance of Steve Howey, who portrays Nick, as a series regular.

However, this does not automatically confirm that Nick dies or that he will not appear in season 3. He could negotiate a guest star role to conclude his character's storyline, whatever that may ultimately be.

Wagner's fate may not be entirely sealed just yet. The outlets also report that the series is still seeking a new showrunner, and whoever takes on that role could determine once and for all whether Nick makes it out alive.
