A house hunter who had high hopes of finding a new home with her husband on A Place in the Sunhas opened up about her experience on the show. Karen and Mark Morrall set out to find a "modern" and spacious property in Spain in August 2021,with the help of presenter Lee Juggurnauth. On a budget of £150,000, the pair were shown around various properties in Torrevieja, Costa Blanca, but unfortunately didn't fall in love with any of them.
Reflecting on their time on the programme, Karen said that while they enjoyed the experience and found the team "very polite and pleasant", they wouldn't do it again. She exclusively told us: "The crew had a schedule of places that they took us to, and we didn't really get any input into it.
"If we had, I wouldn't have chosen to go look at the Blue Lake and the Pink Lake. That was a bit of a waste of time. At the end of the day, Channel 4 are making a TV programme, they are not estate agents and don't really know a lot about the local area."
Describing the behind-the-scenes process, she recalled long filming days that involved spending hours in a single property to get "lots of takes". She admitted that at one point, waiting to get into a property also left her "furious" and almost made her walk off.
She continued: "There's a lot going on behind the scenes. They have to get permission from the owners to film in the properties. So, if one property was perfect for you but they couldn't get permission to film there, then they wouldn't show it to you."
"It was an experience, but we wouldn't do it again," she added. "We just had one day when they left us waiting in the car for a few hours because they couldn't gain entry to a property. I was furious and nearly walked. But it was an experience, and we're here now, living our best life."
After viewing the five properties, the couple told Lee they would be continuing their search for a place in the sun on their own.
In response, the presenter said: "I'd love to know how you get on," before admitting he was "gutted" that their time on the show hadn't paid off.
Sharing her thoughts on the host, Karen said she didn't know much about him beforehand, but found him to be "a nice guy". She and her husband have since secured a villa they love in San Miguel de Salinas, with the help of a local estate agent.
Meanwhile Lee, who joined the programme in the same year, has also helped other expats, including Neil and Sarah, find homes overseas. Five years ago, the couple sold everything to retire early and used the show as a platform to find their dream property abroad.
Speaking on their YouTube channel, 2GoRoam Travels, Neil shared his perspective on filming and working with Lee, telling viewers: "Now, I know a lot of people, because I've spoken to a lot of people, have a certain view about Lee. They think he's a bit full of himself and not their favourite presenter. However, after spending considerable time with him, I can tell you he's completely different from what people might assume."
He continued: "Let me tell you this, having been on the show, I would not do it any other way. That guy is phenomenal, he's funny, he's hilarious. He's a really, really nice bloke and probably nothing like you'd expect him to be in real life.
"I know we haven't spent time in the UK for five years, but I know he's on telly quite a lot these days. Just respect that what you see on TV is a persona - who he really is is something different."
A Place in the Sun continues today at 3pm on Channel 4
