There is good news for customers of private telecom companies Jio, Airtel and Vii. These customers will get relief soon. Because the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has proposed new rules. Under the new rules, telecom operators will have to introduce budget-friendly mobile plans that focus only on voice and SMS services. The proposed proposal is part of the amendment to the ‘Telecom Consumer Protection Regulation, 2026’. The aim is to bring transparency in pricing and attract customers to opt for plans.

According to reports, a proposal submitted by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said that while earlier operators were asked to introduce special tariff vouchers (STVs) that only include voice and SMS, the options available in the market are still limited and these plans often come at exorbitant rates without including data benefits. Based on the information received, TRAI has found that the current measures have not yielded the expected results, hence the need for more stringent guidelines.
Under the new proposal, telecom companies like Vii, Jio and Airtel are likely to have to introduce a dedicated ‘Voice and SMS only’ plan for each validity, which is now available for data-only plans. This means, customers may soon get voice and SMS plans too, whose validity may be equal to the validity of data plans. Therefore, customers will not have to spend much money for internet services.
TRAI is of the view that this decision will ensure fair rates. PIB India has written on social media platform X that the regulator is of the opinion that it is necessary to focus on this issue. To put it simply, companies are currently offering plans with validity of 28, 56 and 84 days for data packs.

Now telecom companies have to offer plans with similar validity for customers who don’t need data but only calling and SMS. After this decision by TRAI, now customers don’t need to buy unnecessary data plans just to get more validity. Now the question arises, will any new rule be issued for users who don’t even need SMS like data? Although no information about this has been announced yet, all users are currently focused on TRAI’s decision.
