After another disappointing show in IPL 2026, the Kolkata Knight Riders' inconsistency problems persist as they succumbed to a 32-run defeat against the Chennai Super Kings on April 14. Chasing 193, the Knight Riders failed to show any fight and fall short yet again raising questions over the team combination and their performance.
The captain Ajinkya Rahane was open about the tough time the team is facing and suggested possible change in the playing XI for the upcoming matches. The Mumbai born cricketer was firm in staying positive amid the losing streak.
Rahane said at the post match presentation:
"I think combination-wise we thought the combination which we had last game and this was really good. I think it is tough at the moment. Yes, we are not winning matches, it is tough. What is important for all of us as a group to stay positive, keep our head up, keep our chin up, just focus on the moment."
He added that the team will not shy away from sitting and discuss options.
he further stated:
"Yes, we will have to sit in the dressing room, think about the combinations. We will have to make any changes. Sometimes you back the players if the results are going your way then it is okay. But if the results are not going your way then you will have to think about the combination. But apart from that, I thought it is all about being positive and keep our heads up,"

Team Combination Under Scrutiny
However, the inconsistent batting coupled with the non-performance from key players have been the main concern for the Knight Riders. One of the biggest failures has been Cameron Green who was roped in for a hefty sum and had delivered only 56 runs in the five matches he has played for KKR. He also got a golden duck against the Super Kings.
It is not just in batting that Green has been having a difficult time. With the ball, Green has only managed to bag 1 wicket and has conceded at an expensive rate, thereby putting more pressure on the side and thus forcing them to reassess the combination.
Doubts also hang over the inclusion of Finn Allen as he hasn't been consistent at the top with his bat and the KKR side might be tempted to get players like Rachin Ravindra or Tim Seifert in order to boost their batting strength.
Hope for Bowling Unit:
The good news for the KKR side is the availability of Matheesha Pathirana in their next fixture against the Gujarat Titans, whose presence could make a huge difference in the pace attack and help them get back in control of the game.
KKR have tried several combinations at the top, one of which is having Sunil Narine open the batting with them and while that did have a bit of promise it just wasn't enough to make up for the wins.
With the losses continuing and the pressure mounting high, KKR are in a tight spot and if they need to get their season back on track, the management will have to make some bold calls concerning players who haven't performed up to their expectations.
