Mumbai Indians face a huge blow as star opener Rohit Sharma is expected to miss the upcoming Indian Premier League 2026 season clash against Punjab Kings at the Wankhede stadium.
The opening batter suffered a hamstring injury in the previous MI fixture against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Rohit was looking in great touch during a chase of 241 but was forced to walk out of the ground after feeling some discomfort in his hamstring in the sixth over. His departure proved costly for Mumbai who went on to lose the match against RCB and suffered their third loss in four matches.
With Rohit likely to be out, Mumbai now have a dilemma on their hands. Who will partner with Rickelton at the top of the order? Let's explore four players who could potentially open the batting for Mumbai Indians at Rohit's place.
4 Players Who Could Replace Rohit Sharma Against PBKS
Quinton de Kock
A very obvious and ready-made replacement, Quinton de Kock could be the man to open the batting for MI against the Punjab Kings. A left-hander, de Kock brings experience and aggressive batting to the table which aligns perfectly with Mumbai Indians' game plan.
He already has 3300+ IPL runs to his name and a 140-run knock against KKR in the IPL 2022 season stands out as one of the greatest innings ever played in the tournament. His capability to take the attack to the bowlers right from the start and give Mumbai quick starts will be invaluable for the side.
The only drawback is that picking de Kock at the top of the order will make Mumbai balance their overseas players and one of either Mitchell Santner or Trent Boult will have to miss out.

Suryakumar Yadav
Another suitable option for Mumbai Indians is Suryakumar Yadav. SKY has opened in the past in the IPL, and has some impressive statistics up his sleeve. He has accumulated 441 runs in 12 innings at the top, with an average of 36.75 and a strike rate of 136.11.
Although his form hasn't been great of late, a return to the opening position might help him. With only two fielders outside the circle, SKY will have ample opportunity to play his trademark attacking strokes and build momentum. Opening will help MI to stick with the same overseas composition.
Will Jacks
Will Jacks would be another option. The English all-rounder, who missed the first four matches for MI, is expected to join the squad ahead of the PBKS clash. However, his availability for the PBKS game is not known.
Jacks has opened just once in the IPL ( scoring 5), but he averages significantly higher while batting at no. 3. He has scored 440 runs in 16 innings at an exceptional strike rate of 153.6, making it clear that he has the ability to hit big and score quickly. MI will think of him opening when available to exploit the powerplay.

Danish Malewar
A bit of a shock option would be Danish Malewar. The 22-year old may not have played high-level T20 games yet, but has scored freely in first-class cricket for Vidarbha.
He was signed by MI for his big hitting abilities and this is an ideal situation to try him. If MI wishes to retain their overseas all-options such as Rickelton, Sherfane, Boult and Mitchell Santner/Will Jacks, Danish Malewar would be a perfect fit at the Indian opening slot.
