Former Union Minister Smriti Irani on Saturday launched a scathing attack on Congress regarding the Women's Reservation Bill. He accused Congress of “cheating” women. Along with this, he accused them of celebrating the defeat of their political hopes after the Constitution Amendment Bill to implement reservation for women and increase the number of Lok Sabha was defeated in the lower house.
Smriti Irani Accused the Congress and its allies of being happy over not giving 33 percent reservation to women in the assemblies, whereas women leaders of various parties had demanded it for decades.
He alleged that those who clapped and thumped the table in the Lok Sabha yesterday. This country and its women, youth and men will also not forgive. Women will not forgive those who laughed out loud yesterday, they will remember them.
He said that Congress and its allies were celebrating the fact that women who had struggled for years in politics, and who were demanding only 33 per cent reservation in Parliament, were deprived of their rights.”
The Constitutional Amendment Bill to implement women's reservation and increase the strength of the Lok Sabha failed in the Lok Sabha on Friday as it did not get the required two-thirds majority. 298 members voted in favor of the bill, while 230 voted against it. Of the 528 members who voted, the bill needed 352 votes to pass.
He claimed that Congress took the credit for carrying forward the vision of giving political rights to women for almost 98 years. However, he questioned the consequences of that claim, saying that the events in Parliament had exposed the party's intentions.
He said that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is against giving 33% reservation to women. Today she was cashing in on her grandfather's great grandfather's 98 year old dream. He said today that his great grandfather first dreamed of women's reservation, but he did not tell that in 98 years he did not have the capacity to implement it. Why did they not implement it?
Smriti Irani said that apart from the Gandhi-Nehru family, she does not want any poor and lower class woman of the country to come forward in politics. All the power should be in their hands and the common woman of this country should not get power.
He said that if Congress and DMK really had the intention to protect the southern states. Then when the Home Minister proposed to increase the seats in the House by 50 percent, why was it not accepted? He said that if there was political benefit to be gained from this, he would have supported Congress, TMC and DMK. Tonight the Prime Minister will tell the people of the country about the future of this bill.
He said that by saying that give women reservation in the existing seat number only, you are not doing injustice to men. This issue should also be raised. He said that the Prime Minister has done both the work of increasing the participation of women and saving men from harm.
