A new study has revealed the UK's cheapest commuter town. These towns, often located just outside major cities, are full of people who want a more affordable lifestyle while maintaining access to a major UK hub. People often commute from these towns into the nearby big cities, but enjoy a slightly slower pace of life outside the country's most expensive places to live in, especially for renters.
SpareRoom teamed up with The Sun for analysis of the cost of living in commuter towns, and discovered that living in the top one can save people around £1,726. It comes as rental prices in London, the largest city in the country, have reportedly increased by a staggering 37% in the last five years, while prices in Liverpool have risen by 40%. This has resulted in many people flocking to commuter towns outside the UK's major cities. However, the savings in rent need to be considered alongside new travel costs, as your commute will be much longer.
The town of Livingston, outside of Edinburgh, was revealed to be the best commuter town for saving money, where people save an average of £1,726 a year, even with travel costs factored in.
Travel to Edinburgh from Livingston is under 30 minutes. Rent is significantly cheaper, while travel costs aren't massive. Meanwhile, the average price of a house in Livingston is £290,364, according to Lloyds Banking Group, compared to £352,996 in Edinburgh.
The analysis revealed that the commuter towns with the biggest savings are:
Matt Hutchinson, director of flatshare site SpareRoom, said: "Given how high rents are now compared to where they were five years ago, people are faced with no choice but to chase affordability...
"When even flatsharers are turning away from major cities to surrounding towns, you know there's a huge problem with affordability.
"But it's really important to weigh up the cost of a longer commute versus the potential savings on rent before making a move."
Overall, Bootle is the town with the cheapest average rent for a room, followed by Motherwell, Birkenhead and Bangor (Northern Ireland).
