Uttar Pradesh has emerged as the top-performing state under the Ayushman Bharat, marking a major milestone in the healthcare sector under the Yogi Adityanath government. The state has been recognised for ensuring near-universal coverage and effective implementation of the scheme on the ground.
At a two-day national conclave held in Pune on April 17–18, the National Health Authority (NHA) honoured Uttar Pradesh for its excellence in implementing both the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM).
Health Secretary Ritu Maheshwari and State Health Agency CEO Archana Verma said the achievement reflects sustained efforts to expand and digitise healthcare services across the state.
Expanding Network of Hospitals with Digital Integration
According to officials, Uttar Pradesh currently has 6,433 hospitals empanelled under the scheme, including 3,521 private and 2,912 government facilities. This extensive network highlights the government’s push to improve healthcare accessibility.
Many of these hospitals are now equipped with ABDM-enabled Hospital Management Information Systems (HMIS), ensuring digital, transparent, and efficient services for patients. Over the past year, the state has prioritised empanelling high-quality hospitals to strengthen service delivery.
Improved Access to Advanced and Critical Care
The Health Department recently added 55 large hospitals with 100 or more beds to the scheme, significantly boosting secondary and tertiary healthcare capacity. This expansion has enhanced treatment facilities for serious and complex illnesses.
The government has also focused on improving the quality of care by prioritising specialised services such as neurosurgery, neonatal care, oncology, radiology, plastic surgery, and burn management.
These improvements have reduced the need for patients to travel to metro cities or other states for advanced treatment. The biggest beneficiaries are residents of rural and remote areas, where access to quality healthcare was previously limited.
With better infrastructure and wider coverage under Ayushman Bharat, not only has access to healthcare improved, but the financial burden on economically weaker sections has also been significantly reduced.
