West Bengal Election 2026 : Election dates in West Bengal are approaching. The first phase of voting in the state will be held on April 23. The second phase will be held on April 29. The election results will be announced on May 4. Meanwhile, the focus of the country is on the candidates standing in this election in Bengal. According to the ADR report, out of a total of 1,445 candidates in the second phase, 338 (23%) candidates have declared criminal cases against them.
Moreover, 295 (20%) of these candidates have serious criminal cases. Out of these 16 candidates have been charged with murder and 80 with attempted murder. Criminal cases have been registered against 94 women candidates. It is noteworthy that out of the 102 BJP candidates with criminal cases, 92 (65%) have serious criminal convictions.
Meanwhile, 42 (30%) of the 142 TMC candidates with criminal cases, 42 (42%) of the 100 CPI(M) candidates and 30 (21%) of the 142 Congress candidates have cases under serious criminal sections. All parties have their share of tainted candidates.
Out of the 1,445 candidates in the second phase of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, 321 or 22% are crorepati candidates. The average total score of the candidates is approximately 1.21

Out of 142 constituencies in the second phase, 63 i.e. 44% are on red alert. Red alert constituencies are constituencies where three or more candidates have declared criminal cases against them.
The list of the top three richest candidates has one BJP candidate and two Trishnamool Congress candidates. However, the BJP candidate has the highest margin.
In the second phase, the average assets of Trinamool Congress candidates were found to be Rs 5.05 crore, followed by BJP Rs 3.28 crore, CPI(M) Rs 1.22 crore and Congress Rs 1.04 crore.
Meanwhile, four of the candidates with the least assets have declared zero (0) assets in their affidavits. These include Moushumi Ghosh, Asif Hussain, Shehzadi Parveen and S. K. including Habib.
The candidate with the least declared assets is Dilip Samfui. Independent) and Sheikh Mohiuddin (Amra Bengali), whose total assets are only 1,000.
Palash Rana: He is a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate and is contesting from Raidighi Constituency. His total declared assets are Rs 104 crores.
Sameer Chakraborty: He is a Trinamool Congress candidate and his constituency is Pandua. His total assets are Rs 76 crores.
Ahmed Javed: He is also a candidate of Trinamool Congress and he is contesting from Town (Malda) Constituency. His assets are Rs 39 crores.

An analysis of 321 candidates in the second phase of the election has revealed the shocking reality of ‘millionaire’ candidates in political parties. In this, Trinamool Congress has fielded the most rich candidates, out of the total 142 candidates of the party, 103 candidates (73 percent) are millionaires. Below that is the rank of Bharatiya Janata Party, out of 141 candidates of BJP, 73 candidates (52 percent) are millionaires.
On the other hand, the ratio appears to be relatively low among the Left parties and the Congress. Of the 100 CPI(M) candidates, 33 (33 per cent) are millionaires, while 36 (25 per cent) of the 142 Congress candidates have assets of over Rs 1 crore. Overall, this data shows that all the major parties preferred rich candidates in this phase.
