Fans of Broadchurch will be glad to watch this equally gripping TV show with one of the same leading actors in a binge-watchable standalone series.
Created and written by Jonathan Brackley and Sam Vincent, Better is a BBC crime drama telling the story of a corrupt police officer across five episodes.
Viewers watch on as the officer attempts to turn her life around, but everything is seemingly getting worse. She makes an attempt to escape from the power of Col McHugh, the powerful criminal she has been working under, but it poses even more of a threat.
Playing the lead character is Leila Farzad as DI Lou Slack, alongside Broadchurch's Andrew Buchan as Col McHugh. Buchan is best known for playing Mark Latimer in Broadchurch but plays a more menacing, far less likeable character in this series.
For 19 years the officer has been giving 'tip-offs' to the crime boss, which in turn has helped her career and allowed his criminal empire to rise. Although when her son falls ill with meningitis, her priorities shift and she needs to find a way out, alive.
The series is set in Leeds and across West Yorkshire, offering a gritty and real backdrop to the crimes taking place. It aims to explore the grey areas of what is right and wrong and what can happen as a result of wanting to be 'better'.
One fan of the show took to Rotten Tomatoes to say: "I found it very entertaining. Even intense at times. I think the acting was excellent, especially the main characters. The Brits do a good job here. I agree the ending left a lot to be desired. Won't be the first or the last. I'm a sucker for crime/drama."
Another shared: "The BBC have done it again when it comes to exceptional police crime drama in the form of 'Better'.
"This series really goes deep at times. It's a study of friendship, morality, power and what's right and wrong. As our lead faces dilemma after dilemma, you watch her life slowly spiral out of control and her become more desperate."
Better was viewed by millions as it aired on TV and has garnered a large amount of rave reviews from fans who gave it an overall rating on Rotten Tomatoes of 89%.
Despite all of this, the show was not picked up for a second season, leaving the plotline somewhat up in the air with a major cliffhanger.
The show ended in 2023 and has not been picked back up for a second season after not garnering quite enough attention to continue the story.
A disappointed viewer wrote: "Sooooo Good - But they stopped filming the series!!! The acting, directing, and filming are top-notch. Apparently they scrapped the series BEFORE you have any idea what happens."
All five episodes of Better are available to stream now on BBC iPlayer.
