The teaser of Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups, starring Yash, has sparked controversy after some viewers objected to its sexually suggestive content. The film, directed by Geetu Mohandas, has drawn criticism from certain groups, while also generating discussion around its creative approach.
Speaking at CinemaCon in conversation with American content creator and host Sabeen Faheem, Yash spoke about the director’s approach and the concept behind the film. He said, "That's the most exciting part. So what happens is that when you generally say action films, it's only restricted to male directors. That's been historically true in India. A lot of people have done that. A large-scale action film, that too a gangster film with a female gaze, is something which is very new and refreshing."
He further highlighted the director’s treatment of emotional and intimate elements in the narrative. Yash added, "Thoughts are very clear, and she has a strong conviction in whatever she does. And she's a fabulous writer. I could learn so much, you know. The desire quotient or certain emotions, romance or sensuality-how a female can show, how a woman can present-is entirely different, which is what I've realised in this journey."

The controversy centres on a scene in the teaser showing a woman inside a car engaged in an intimate moment with Yash’s character. Following the release, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Women’s Wing filed a formal complaint with the Karnataka State Women’s Commission, describing the visuals as “obscene” and “explicit.” The complaint also claimed that the content could negatively impact women and children and argued that it goes against Kannada cultural values. The group has urged authorities to direct the Karnataka government to withdraw or cancel the teaser.
In response, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) clarified that the teaser was released on YouTube and therefore does not fall under its certification process. The board stated that certification is required only for films and trailers intended for theatrical release, while digital promotional material remains outside its regulatory scope.
Following the backlash, director Geetu Mohandas shared a cryptic message on Instagram. She wrote, "Chilling while people figure out female pleasure, consent, women playing systems, etc., etc."
Toxic also features Nayanthara, Rukmini Vasanth, Kiara Advani, Huma Qureshi, and Tara Sutaria. The film is among the most anticipated releases of 2026 and is scheduled to hit theatres on June 4, 2026.
