Just a month ago, the youth of Nepal, known as Gen Z, supported Balendra Shah in becoming Prime Minister. However, this same group has now begun to oppose him. In a short span, discussions have emerged among some citizens about removing Balendra Shah from his position. Recently, Shah's government attempted to assert itself against India, but India swiftly responded, addressing the situation within 48 hours. India values its relationship with Nepal and will not tolerate any disrespect; if the Nepalese government continues to act defiantly, it will face consequences. Just days ago, the Balendra Shah administration announced that Nepalese citizens bringing goods worth over ₹100 from India would be subject to customs duties. This means that any Nepalese individual purchasing items exceeding ₹100 from India must pay customs fees at the border.

Impact of New Regulations on Nepalese Citizens

This new regulation will make goods more expensive for the people of Nepal. The public has reacted strongly against Prime Minister Balendra Shah's decision. Additionally, India has dealt a significant blow to Nepal amid a fuel crisis and lockdown. In several districts of Bihar, a major decision has been implemented: vehicles with Nepalese license plates will no longer be able to purchase petrol and diesel at Indian petrol stations near the border. Previously, many Nepalese would travel to Bihar to fill their tanks, as petrol was approximately ₹28 cheaper and diesel ₹31 cheaper than in their own country. However, under the new guidelines, vehicles from Nepal will be denied fuel in Bihar's Araria, Purnia, Kishanganj, Supaul, and Katihar districts.

Consequences of Nepal's Customs Duty

Now, Nepalese vehicles will not be able to refuel in Bihar at lower prices. While it cannot be claimed that India made this decision solely in response to Nepal's actions, the decision has been made nonetheless. Interestingly, the areas in Bihar where Nepalese vehicles are barred from obtaining fuel are the same regions where Nepalese citizens previously shopped. These areas are now subject to the new customs duties imposed by the Nepalese military.
