However, many students mistakenly believe that studying in France is inexpensive and that lower fees indicate inferior education quality.
President Macron has dismissed this notion, asserting that lower tuition fees do not equate to poor educational standards. He acknowledged that while this argument may seem peculiar, the cost of studying in France is considerably lower compared to many other countries, without compromising on quality. This article aims to clarify the actual expenses associated with studying in France.
It's important to note that a significant portion of the expenses related to higher education is covered by the French government, amounting to millions. The cost for Indian students varies based on the institution they choose. Students from non-European Union countries typically pay lower fees than those from the US or UK. For instance, the annual tuition for a bachelor's degree is around ₹2.6 lakh, while a master's degree costs approximately ₹3.5 lakh per year, and a PhD can be around ₹35,000 annually.
However, attending private institutions can lead to higher expenses. Engineering and business colleges tend to have the highest fees, with annual costs ranging from ₹7 lakh to ₹18 lakh. Additionally, students must cover their living expenses, which can range from ₹36,000 to ₹72,000 per month for accommodation, and food costs between ₹18,000 and ₹27,000.
Transportation costs can vary from ₹2,700 to ₹6,800. Students are provided with free healthcare insurance. Furthermore, those who apply through the CAF (Caisse d'Allocations Familiales) may receive a refund of 20% to 40% of their monthly rent. The French government also offers various scholarships to Indian students, some of which include monthly stipends.
