Air India has welcomed the Government of India’s hub-and-spoke standard operating procedure (SOP) and said it is preparing to start international connectivity from Varanasi under the new model. The airline said the move is aimed at expanding global access beyond metro cities and improving connectivity for passengers.
In an official statement, Air India said the hub-and-spoke framework will help strengthen network efficiency and support better use of airport infrastructure across the country. The airline added that the shift will mark a change in how air travel operates in India.
Focus on international flights expansion from Varanasi
Air India said it is aligning its network expansion plans with the new model and will introduce international flights from Varanasi. The airline said this will improve connectivity for passengers from nearby regions and reduce dependence on metro hubs.
“The introduction of international hub-and-spoke connectivity from Varanasi underscores our focus on expanding India’s global aviation footprint beyond metros. It will provide tremendous boost to international travellers from India’s Tier 2 and tier 3 cities by cutting down travel time, while making travel seamless and convenient,” said P. Balaji, Group Head – Governance, Risk, Compliance and Corporate Affairs, Air India.

Air India said the hub-and-spoke model will move India’s aviation sector from a point-to-point system to a transit-based network. The airline said this will allow better aircraft utilisation and reduce congestion at major airports.

“This is a transformative step for Indian aviation. We would like to thank the Hon’ble Prime Minister for his vision, to make India a global aviation hub and develop the entire aviation ecosystem. The hub-and-spoke model will not only strengthen connectivity but also ensure optimal use of airport infrastructure developed across the country. We thank the Minister of Civil aviation for championing the entire Hub and Spoke model which will create a strong multiplier effect and act as a catalyst for India’s broader growth,” said Campbell Wilson, Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director, Air India,.
Implementation and coordination
The airline said coordination between airlines, airports and government agencies will be important for implementation. It added that operational readiness, passenger convenience and security considerations are being addressed as the model is rolled out.
Air India said the new system will also decentralise processes such as customs and immigration, which could help ease congestion and improve passenger experience.
