A one-day special session of the Uttar Pradesh Legislature has been called today i.e. Thursday. The main focus of this session is on the amendment of the Women's Reservation Nari Shakti Vandan Act, in which the BJP government is going to bring a censure motion against the opposition, especially the Samajwadi Party and the Congress. Finance and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Khanna will present this censure motion in the Assembly. After the proposal there will be discussion by party leaders and MLAs. There is also a possibility of detailed debate in the House on issues like women empowerment, women safety, education, employment and social participation. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will address the House late in the evening.
After the controversy over the amendment and delimitation of the Nari Shakti Vandan Bill and its non-passage, the BJP government has called this special session, accusing the opposition of obstruction and conspiracy in the empowerment of women. The cabinet had approved it. The government says that the opposition did not allow the bill to be passed in the Lok Sabha, while the BJP is committed to providing one-third reservation for women. Women members will be given more time during the discussion.
On the other hand, Samajwadi Party discussed 16 women's issues in its party office yesterday and passed its extreme condemnation resolution against the BJP government. In the meeting of MLAs held under the chairmanship of Akhilesh Yadav, instructions were given to participate actively in the House and raise all women related issues. SP has reiterated the demand to implement women's reservation on the basis of 2023 census. Congress is also preparing to attack the government in coordination with the opposition. There are chances of uproar in both the houses. At 9:30 am, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will hold a meeting of NDA MLAs at Log Bhawan.
In the meeting of the Consultative Committee, it was agreed to maintain the dignity of the House and have meaningful discussion. In the meeting chaired by Leader of the House Keshav Prasad Maurya, all parties expressed confidence in following democratic values. Leader of Opposition Lal Bihari Yadav and other leaders will address. There will be no question hour. Many ordinances will be placed on the table.
If any bills are to be restored, they will also be introduced.
This special session is being considered a part of BJP's strategy to tap the women vote bank and corner the opposition before the 2027 assembly elections. SP MLA Kamal Akhtar is calling it a political stunt and is demanding implementation of reservation in the 2023 census. Everyone's eyes are on the proceedings of the session, because both sides are adopting an aggressive stance on a sensitive issue like women's reservation. An appeal has been made to keep the proceedings of the House smooth, but the possibility of uproar and war of words remains. SP MLAs can also protest against the government at the Chaudhary Charan Singh statue located in the Assembly at 10:30 am.
