Indian Railways Luggage Policy: When traveling, people often assume that fines for excess luggage apply only to air travel. We all know that carrying luggage exceeding the prescribed weight limit on a flight incurs additional charges; however, very few people are aware that an identical rule applies to railways as well. Even today, many passengers remain unaware of this regulation. If you carry luggage exceeding the prescribed weight limit while traveling by train, you too could face a hefty fine. Therefore, before embarking on a train journey, be sure to pay close attention to the weight and dimensions of your luggage. Failure to adhere to the established rules may result in you having to pay additional charges during your journey.

How much luggage can you carry on a train?
During train journeys, we often attempt to carry our entire household's belongings with us; however, did you know that the railways have established a specific limit for the amount of luggage one can carry? In fact, the maximum weight you are permitted to carry without incurring any additional charges is determined by the class of your ticket. The railways have set distinct free luggage allowances for each specific class of travel.

Luggage Allowance by Class:
AC First Class (1A) – 70 kg
AC Second Tier (2A) – 50 kg
AC Third Tier / Sleeper (3A/SL) – 40 kg
Second Sitting (2S) – 35 kg

This implies that if you carry luggage exceeding the prescribed limit, you may be liable to pay a fine; however, carrying luggage up to a certain maximum permissible limit is permitted. Therefore, prior to traveling by train, ensure you verify the weight of your luggage against your ticket class to avoid any potential complications.

Free Allowance: This refers to the maximum weight of luggage you are permitted to carry without incurring any additional charges. As long as your luggage falls within this limit, you simply need to lift and stow it under your seat or in the designated storage area.

Marginal Excess Allowance: The railways provide a provision allowing passengers to carry a small amount of luggage slightly in excess of the standard free allowance. If your luggage exceeds the prescribed limit only slightly—for instance, 50 kg instead of the 40 kg limit in Sleeper Class—no penalty will be levied. You will simply be required to pay a nominal fee for the excess weight.

Maximum Limit—Carrying luggage beyond this specific limit into the passenger coach is strictly prohibited. If your luggage exceeds this maximum weight limit, it must be booked separately in the Brake Van (Luggage Van).
