Pete Hegseth finds himself at the center of a storm, facing accusations of misleading the White House, creating discord among Pentagon personnel, and promoting a religious agenda within the military. Despite these controversies, some supporters within MAGA circles are considering him as a potential candidate for the presidency in 2028.
On a recent episode of his podcast, conservative commentator Dan Bongino, who previously served as a deputy director at the FBI, argued that Hegseth deserves recognition for his contributions at the Pentagon and could emerge as a significant contender in the upcoming presidential race.
Bongino's Claims About Hegseth
Bongino's assertions were largely based on undisclosed information he claimed to have witnessed firsthand. He stated that the changes Hegseth made at the Pentagon were so impactful that they would influence the military for years to come. However, he refrained from providing specific details due to legal and national security constraints. "I'm not trying to pretend like, you know, hidden knowledge," he explained during the podcast, as reported by The Daily Beast. "It's just things I can't... I wouldn't disclose." He emphasized that the changes were "so profound" and insisted, "I promise you, I would not make that up."
He also highlighted what he referred to as tangible outcomes, including improvements in military recruitment and advancements in Venezuela and Iran, although he stumbled while discussing casualties, quickly redirecting to frame the overall situation as a success.
Hegseth's 2028 Prospects
Bongino placed Hegseth in the same league as Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, both of whom are already linked to 2028 presidential aspirations. "I think Pete could make a significant run for national office," he stated unequivocally. To support his argument, he shared clips of Hegseth speaking on Capitol Hill, including a moment where the defense secretary touted recruitment figures and another where he engaged in a heated exchange with California Democrat John Garamendi, who referred to the administration's conflict with Iran as a "quagmire."
This term prompted Hegseth to deliver a nearly two-minute rebuttal, drawing on his military experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan to counter Garamendi's claims, accusing him of providing propaganda to adversaries by using such language just two months into the conflict. He questioned the congressman's loyalties and argued that political opposition to Trump was clouding critics' views of what he termed the historic 'success' of the mission. Bongino praised Hegseth, calling him "a great guy" and "an amazing leader" who has endured relentless criticism while achieving results.
Ongoing Allegations Against Hegseth
However, this praise comes amidst a complex backdrop of allegations against Hegseth. Reports have surfaced accusing him of misleading President Trump regarding the situation in Iran, fostering a toxic environment within the Pentagon likened to middle school drama, and facing criticism from senior military officials for promoting a Christian nationalist agenda that has unsettled service members. Despite these serious accusations, Bongino's enthusiasm for Hegseth remains undeterred. Interestingly, he casually mentioned at the end of his segment that Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump, and Lara Trump could also potentially run in 2028.
