There's good news for central government employees and pensioners. An important update has emerged regarding the Eighth Pay Commission. Following the formation of the Eighth Central Pay Commission, preparations for changes to the pay structure, dearness allowance, and fitment factor have gained momentum. If the commission's recommendations are implemented, the minimum basic pay of government employees could increase significantly. Approximately 5 million government employees are likely to see significant salary increases.

How much can the salary increase be?

The Eighth Pay Commission's recommendations will impact approximately 5 million employees and 6.5 million pensioners. The minimum basic pay of government employees could increase from ₹18,000 to ₹51,480. This increase will be based on 18 different levels of the pay scale. Government employees and pensioners at each level will see different improvements based on their current basic pay.

What will be the change in DA and fitment factor?

The Eighth Pay Commission will not only increase salaries but also change the method for determining dearness allowance. The level of dearness allowance will have a direct impact on salary increases. A potential increase in the fitment factor will significantly increase employees' total income and post-retirement benefits, including pension and gratuity.

When will the new pay structure be implemented?

The official notification for the Eighth Pay Commission was issued on January 17, 2025. The new pay structure will be effective from January 1, 2026. The commission is expected to submit its final recommendations by mid-2027. Given the history of previous pay commissions, which typically take 2 to 3.5 years from inception to implementation, it is estimated that employees may have to wait until late 2026 or 2027 to see real benefits.
