In DeLand, Florida, firefighters are currently battling a significant structure fire that has generated a large plume of smoke visible from miles away. The incident, which occurred on South Garfield Avenue, led to a substantial emergency response on Wednesday, as reported by the local firefighters' association.

According to a statement posted on social media, the DeLand Professional Firefighters, along with their counterparts from Volusia County, are actively engaged at the scene. They noted the presence of a large smoke column and urged the public to exercise caution around the area where crews are working.

Images and videos captured from the scene depict thick, dark smoke billowing into the sky. Preliminary local reports indicate that the fire might have started at a scrapyard near Amelia Avenue, although this has not been officially verified. Local news outlets have advised motorists to steer clear of the vicinity while emergency personnel continue their efforts.

Residents from nearby areas reported being able to see the smoke from several miles away, with some stating it was visible from DeLeon Springs, located about 8 miles (13 km) from DeLand. Online discussions have raised concerns regarding the fire's intensity and the nature of the smoke, with speculation that materials typically found in scrapyards, such as metals and rubber, may be contributing to the thick, black smoke.

As of now, authorities have not confirmed the cause of the fire, and there is no information available regarding any injuries.
